Tree Removal in Ryde: Council Rules and Permits

For a tree in the City of Ryde, first establish ownership and the property's controls. Common-property approval and council approval are separate matters.

Limited pruning and exemptions

Ryde's exempt-work guidance (opens in new tab) describes pruning of less than 10% of the crown within 12 months, with branches no larger than 60mm, no habitat hollows and the specified pruning standard.

It also lists size, species and building-proximity provisions. The three-metre building rule measures from the stem at ground level to the outside wall of a lawful dwelling or an outbuilding larger than 20 square metres on the same land. It does not apply simply because a neighbour's building is close. Read those with the exclusions: heritage, threatened-species habitat, development-retention conditions and the Significant Tree Register can prevent an exemption.

Dead or dying trees need written confirmation

Ryde's published process requires natural death or decline, a risk to life or property, and no hollow-bearing habitat needed by native animals. Supply the required evidence and AQF Level 5 risk assessment, and wait for Council's written confirmation before relying on the exemption. A photograph or practical tree-work quote alone does not satisfy it.
