The useful comparison is not only how much can come off, but whether the tree will still work in the space afterwards.
Lopping sits between pruning and taking the tree out. When a tree has outgrown the block and a light trim will not keep it in check, a heavy controlled cutback may be the practical answer — it clears what needs clearing and brings the height or spread down without removing the tree.
A heavy cutback can produce strong new shoots, so the quoted result needs to account for what is likely to grow back and whether the remaining canopy will still suit the property.
Branches sitting on the tiles, filling the gutters or hanging low over the driveway may need more than a light trim. A heavier cutback can restore more clearance where the tree can handle it.
If the canopy grows back into the same spot after every trim, a different approach may be needed. That could be a heavier cutback, a better-targeted prune or removal, depending on the tree.
A granny flat, pool, wider driveway or rear extension may need more canopy clearance. Lopping can work where the tree can stay and the planned work allows it.
The quote can compare the practical options. If the tree is hollow, on the way out, or the cutback would leave a bare trunk with stubs, taking it out may make more sense.
The height, spread and trunk size set the crew time, the equipment and the amount of green waste the job creates.
A lighter reduction is a different job from bringing the height down and pulling the sides in as well. More canopy means more cutting, rigging, chipping and carting away.
Narrow side gates, a steep block, power lines overhead, and whether we need a crane or a lift to get to the top of the tree all change how long the job takes.
Sometimes the best approach changes once we are standing under the tree. A lighter prune might be all it needs, or taking it out may be the better spend if it is not going to come back well from a heavy cutback.
