Tree Removal Sydney

A dead eucalyptus leaning over the roof. A fig whose roots have cracked the driveway. A storm-wrecked trunk blocking the carport. These are the tree removal jobs we handle every week across Sydney — controlled dismantling in tight backyards, crane lifts over double-storey homes, and same-day emergency response when the tree has already come down on its own.

  • Dead, dangerous, storm-damaged, and structurally failing trees
  • Sectional dismantling through narrow side access and over pools
  • Crane-assisted lifts for large trees near houses and power lines
  • Stump grinding, green-waste removal, and swept site at the end

Service Overview

When tree removal is the right call

Every removal starts with the site — access, structures, overhead services, and what the tree is doing. That assessment shapes the method, the equipment, and the price.

Tree removal in Sydney is rarely as simple as cutting and dropping. Most of the trees we remove are close to houses, over pools, tangled in power lines, or wedged between buildings with no direct vehicle access. The method — sectional dismantling from a climbing rig, crane lift over the roof, or controlled fell into a clear drop zone — is chosen based on what the site actually allows.

We assess every job before quoting: tree height and species, trunk condition, access width, overhead services, root-plate stability, and what is sitting underneath the canopy. That assessment drives the price, the method, and the crew and equipment we bring on the day.

  • Every removal planned around the actual site
  • Homes, strata, builders, and commercial sites
  • Site left finished, not just cleared

When You Need It

When tree removal is the right option

These are the situations where the tree has moved past maintenance. If you recognise any of them, removal is likely the safest path forward.

The tree is dead, hollow, or structurally unsound

Major trunk cavities, fungal brackets at the base, crown dieback across more than half the canopy, or a lean that has visibly worsened. These trees fail unpredictably — usually during the next big storm.

Storm damage has made it unsafe

A split fork, snapped leader, torn root plate, or a trunk resting against the house after last night's southerly. Emergency tree removal cannot wait for a scheduled assessment — call us immediately.

The roots or canopy are damaging your property

Lifted driveways, cracked retaining walls, blocked stormwater, roots in sewer pipes, or branches grinding against the Colorbond roof every time the wind picks up. Sometimes removal is the only permanent fix.

Repeated pruning is no longer solving the problem

If the canopy regrows into the roofline within two seasons, or the real issue is the trunk structure rather than the branches, another prune just delays what the tree actually needs.

Urgent tree response

Tree down? Trunk split? Limb on the roof?

Call 0497 777 735 now. Tell us where the tree has failed, what it is resting on, and whether anyone is blocked from their property. We triage by risk level and dispatch a crew — usually same day.

Scope

Tree removal jobs we handle across Sydney

From single backyard trees to multi-tree builder clearances, these are the removal jobs our crews handle across Sydney every week.

Dead, dangerous, and emergency removals

Structurally failing trees, storm-wrecked trunks, split forks hanging over driveways, and any tree that poses an immediate risk. We respond same-day for emergencies.

Sectional dismantling in tight access

Piece-by-piece removal using ropes and rigging through 900mm side gates, between townhouses, over pool fences, and along shared boundaries where there is no room to fell.

Crane-assisted removals over houses

When the tree is too large or too close to structures for ground-based work, we lift sections out by crane — typically over the roofline and onto the street for processing.

Builder and development clearances

Multi-tree removal for DA approvals, demolition prep, granny flat footprints, driveway widening, and new-build site access. Timed to your construction schedule.

Stump grinding and finished-site cleanup

Stump ground 200–300mm below grade, root flare trimmed, green waste chipped or trucked away, and the area raked and blown clean — ready for turf, pavers, or replanting.

Council-regulated and TPO-protected removals

Trees covered by local Tree Preservation Orders. We prepare arborist reports, lodge applications on your behalf, and carry out compliant removal once council grants approval.

AA Tree Service provided excellent service. The tree was in a very dangerous condition, and they removed it safely and professionally. The pricing was fair and reasonable, especially considering the level of risk involved. There was no damage to the fence or surrounding area, and everything was cleaned up thoroughly after the job. I’m very happy with the result and would highly recommend AA Tree Service to others.

Min Tommy TANG

What a wonderful service! I called when a big tree suddenly fell in the backyard. Ahmad came that night to make sure there was no danger and provided a quote which was very reasonable. AA Tree Services came back the very next morning and did an absolutely amazing and fast job of removing the entire tree, cleaning up ALL the mess and taking everything away. Ahmad is so sweet and easy to deal with, I can't say enough positive things about him and the service provided!! I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing tree removal or arborist services. A+! 10/10!

Pricing

What affects the cost of tree removal in Sydney

Tree removal costs in Sydney vary widely. Here is what actually drives the price — and how to get an accurate quote faster.

The four biggest cost drivers are tree size, access difficulty, how close structures sit to the canopy, and whether stump grinding is included. Send two or three photos with your quote request — that is usually enough for us to give you a realistic price the same day.

01

Tree size, species, and condition

A 6-metre bottlebrush in the front yard is a vastly different job from a 25-metre ironbark leaning over the house. Height, trunk diameter, wood density, and whether the tree is dead or alive all drive crew time and equipment.

02

Access to the tree

Can we get a crane or chipper to the tree, or is it rear-access only through a 900mm side gate? Narrow access means more climbing, more rigging, and more time — which increases the quote.

03

What is underneath and around it

Rooflines, pools, retaining walls, Ausgrid power lines, Colorbond fences, and neighbouring property all tighten the drop zone and slow the work. The closer the structures, the more controlled each cut.

04

Stump grinding and waste disposal

Bundling stump grinding and full green-waste removal with the removal is cheaper than booking a separate visit. We can include both in the original quote.

05

Urgency — emergency vs planned removal

Same-day storm call-outs carry a premium because of after-hours timing, unpredictable conditions, and the need to mobilise a crew at short notice. Planned removals with normal lead time cost less.

Council Guidance

Council approval for tree removal in Sydney

Council and approval information is general guidance only. Specific rules can still vary by suburb, council, and tree type.

Before booking

If the tree is established, protected, or part of a larger property change, approvals should be checked before major work is booked in.

Most Sydney trees need approval before removal

Councils protect trees above a certain trunk diameter (typically 100–200mm) or height. Removing without approval can result in fines exceeding $10,000 depending on the LGA and the species.

Emergency removals still need documentation

Even when a tree has failed or is clearly dangerous, most councils want photographic evidence, an arborist assessment, or a written notification before — or shortly after — emergency removal.

Every council sets different rules

Tree Preservation Order thresholds, exempt species lists, and application processes vary by LGA. A tree that is exempt in Randwick Council may need a full DA in Ku-ring-gai. Always check your specific council.

We prepare reports and lodge applications

AA Tree Services Sydney can write the arborist report, lodge the council application, and manage the approval timeline — so the removal is compliant before anyone picks up a chainsaw.

Strata and body-corporate approvals

Trees on common property need a body-corporate resolution plus council approval. We coordinate with strata managers to get both approvals lined up before scheduling the work.

Replacement planting is often required

Many councils attach a condition requiring one or more replacement trees after removal, especially for native, heritage, or significant species. We can advise on species selection and placement.

FAQs

Tree removal questions

These are the clearest signs a tree has moved past maintenance:

Major trunk cavities, splits, or fungal brackets at the base
More than half the canopy is dead or dying back
The root plate has heaved or the lean has worsened noticeably
Roots are cracking driveways, retaining walls, or sewer pipes
Pruning the canopy back only buys you a season before it regrows into the roof

If the tree can be saved with pruning or lopping, we will tell you. We do not recommend removal unless it is genuinely the right call.

Yes — 24/7 including weekends and public holidays. If a tree has fallen across your driveway, a trunk is resting on the roof, or a large branch is hanging over the house, call 0497 777 735 now. Describe what has happened and send a photo if you can. We prioritise by risk and can usually have a crew on site the same day.

That is a large part of what we do. We use sectional dismantling — roping and lowering pieces one at a time — to work through narrow side gates (some as tight as 750mm), over pool fences, between townhouses, and along shared boundary lines. When ground access is too restricted, we bring in a crane to lift sections out over the roofline.

In most council areas, yes. Sydney councils protect trees above a certain trunk diameter or height under Tree Preservation Orders. The threshold, exempt species, and application process vary by LGA. Our council approval guide covers the main Sydney councils step by step.

A small tree with open access might cost a few hundred dollars. A large eucalyptus in a tight backyard with crane hire can run into the thousands. The four main cost drivers are tree size, access difficulty, proximity to structures, and whether stump grinding is included.

Our tree removal cost guide gives realistic Sydney pricing ranges and explains what pushes the quote up or down.

Yes — and it is cheaper to bundle it. Once the trunk is down, the stump grinder takes the stump 200–300mm below ground level. The grindings can be left as mulch or removed. One visit, one cleanup, one invoice. See our stump grinding page for more detail.

Stay well clear, especially if the tree has contacted power lines or if the trunk is still partially standing. Do not attempt to cut or move anything yourself. Call 0497 777 735 and describe the situation — we will advise on immediate safety and get a crew to you as fast as possible.

Our storm damage guide covers the full process for dealing with fallen or damaged trees after a storm.

Most single-tree residential removals take half a day to one full day. Larger trees requiring crane work, or multi-tree clearances, may need two days depending on access and waste volume. We confirm the timeframe in the written quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Every removal includes a standard cleanup — branches chipped on site, debris cleared, and the area swept. Full green-waste trucking and stump grinding can be included in the scope. If you want to keep firewood or mulch, let us know when you request the quote.
